The Promise of a New School Year

There is a phenomenon that happens in LD schools across the country at the beginning of each school year. Parents and families are transformed. We see this transformation at Sand Hill School every year.
This past Monday we had our traditional first day of school meeting for parents. I saw new-to-Sand Hill parents come in with jaws clenched, eyebrows furrowed and shoulders hunched. Parents were bracing themselves for what they surely knew was about to hit them—the start of the new school year. Ugh.
Then, these new-to-Sand Hill parents started hearing from continuing parents how coming to Sand Hill transformed not only their child’s life, but also their family’s life.

I love the start of a new school year. No matter how many times I hear these stories from parents, it always touches me and inspires me. I’m so proud of our teachers and staff and how they make a difference in the lives of kids.
Thinking back to the parent meeting this past Monday, I witnessed parents leaving the meeting with a lighter step, smiles on their faces and eyes sparkling. The burden they have been carrying so long is beginning to lift. Ahhh…they are learning to breathe again.
Lives transformed. Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
